Intaglio printmaking
A copper or zincplate is covered with an acidresistant coat. With a steelneedle the drawing is made into this coating. Wherever the metall is bare the nitric acid will etch lines and dots into the plate. After cleaning the plate ink is pushed into those lines and dots, the surface of the plate itself is wiped clean, the plate is run with damp paper on top of it through a printing press. Under the pressure of the press the paper picks up the ink. For each new impression the plate has to be inked again. If the drawing is directly made with the steelneedle into the plate, it will be called drypoint or engraving.
